  • While we don’t have dedicated parking, we can offer an extra hour of free parking at the Water St Garage or the Market St Garage!

    Ask for a voucher with your purchase at the register.

  • We are open:

    • Monday - Thursday: 10am - 6pm

    • Friday - Saturday: 10am - 8pm

    • Sunday: 12pm - 5pm

 

General Shop FAQ:

  • Yes! Please feel free to bring your furry friends in the store, as long as they are leashed and friendly.

  • Yes! Our entrance and store are both wheelchair- and stroller-accessible.

  • Yes! Please ask at the front desk for the password.

  • We specialize in kids’ books (and even offer a Kids’ Club!), though we have books of many different genres.

  • Yes! We sell greeting cards by local artists, book-themed jigsaw puzzles, book earrings, and other book-related ephemera.

  • Yes! We have cozy, comfortable seating where you can peruse before purchase.

  • Yes! While we don’t have an eCommerce shop, we offer online purchasing through several affiliates.

Book Credit FAQ:

  • We stock most kinds of books for all ages, especially for children and young adults.

    We carry nonfiction, fiction, sci-fi, mysteries, history, science, and numerous other categories:

    We typically need these types of books:

    • Architecture

    • Art

    • Children’s & Young Adult, especially those featuring African Americans and Latinx

    • Collectibles

    • Cookbooks

    • History

    • Large print books

    • Local interest (C’ville, UVA, Thomas Jefferson)

    • Military history

    • Mystery/suspense (primarily mass-market paperbacks)

    • Philosophy

    • Prize-winning titles

    • Science

    • Science fiction/fantasy/horror (primarily mass-market paperbacks)

    • Trains/railroading

    • Travel essays

  • We typically don’t need:

    • Audiobooks on tape/CDs, music CDs, DVDs

    • Book Club editions of literature/fiction

    • “Coffee Table” photo books, especially travel books (Art books are the exception)

    • Computer program/application books

    • Diet books

    • Encyclopedias/Dictionaries

    • Ex-library books

    • Hardcover books missing their original dustjacket

    • Magazines

    • Mystery/thriller hardcovers

    • Non-fiction small paperbacks

    • Partisan politics

    • Political memoirs

    • Reader’s Digest Condensed Books

    • Romance

    • Textbooks

    • Travel guides

    • Yard sale or garage sale leftovers

  • The amount we offer depends on the condition of the book and whether we already have a copy.

    We typically grant $2.00 credit for trade paperbacks and $4.00 for hardbacks.

  • We want books that are clean and in very good condition, without writing or marks except for owner name.

    Hardcover books generally need dust jackets.

  • Please bring only two medium boxes or bags at one time (no large plastic tubs or bins).

    If you have a particularly large collection you would like to donate, please contact us to arrange a house call to review the books (if nearby).

  • We will ask you to fill out our intake form authorizing us to try to sell any of your books that we accept.

    We ask that you return within one week and take back any books that we decline, or you can indicate that you would like them donated to a thrift store (if in good condition) or to Goodwill or the McIntire recycling center (if in poor condition).
